ICE ICE BABY
This Orange and Blueberry Slushy recipe is too easy and too simple, I would feel like cheating if I gave you the recipe without a little anecdote.
Although Maaaa (aka. my mom) is capable of making anything that is sold in a supermarket, buying brand name foods was always so special and enchanting for my brother and I growing up. There was no one at school that got more excited about a real pack of Oreo cookies than my brother and I. Now, writing this makes me realize how ungrateful and spoiled my brother and I were of my mother’s home cooking, however I suppose a child that grew up eating only restaurant or store-prepared food would have felt the same way when they had a chance to eat a home cooked meal.
Slurpees from 7/11 were especially memorable. I remember my brother and I conservatively saving our money to buy a one-dollar Slurpee on Fridays, and I remember the meticulous process we both put ourselves through to craft our individually perfect Slurpees. On the walk home, Maaaa used to interrupt our sensational brain freezes with comments like these:
“Why you waste your money? Is sugar and juice. Daniela buy sugar for $1 and André buy juice for $1. Then you make lots of Surpees.”
“You don’t know how to spend money. Not you, not André.”
“I can make this at home. And better.”
“With $2, I can make Surpees for one year.”
Here in Europe, 7/11s nor Slurpees (or Surpees according to Maaaa) are not so easy to come across. My 10-year-old self would kill me for saying this, but I’m glad. In hindsight, anything from 7/11 was and still is ratchet. This homemade slushy is free from artificial colouring and sugars. Only real fresh fruits and plant based sugar here! I used oranges and blueberries because I love the colour and taste the two make together, but use whichever fruits you desire. You can never go wrong.
